The Supreme Court

My husband and I were discussing Dylan Ratigan’s rant on YouTube this morning.

Unbelievable Rant on MSNBC! Reporter CRACKS & Spews TRUTH! Occupy Wall Street Anonymous LOOK!

He is absolutely right. We asked each other how the cycle of monetary corruption in politics could be broken. The answer was The Supreme Court. They are the ones who gave voice to corporations. They solidified corporations as “people” and gave them a voice. So I sat and wondered how their decision could possibly be overturned and we could start heading in the right direction again.

I read about the SC, I had never really had any reason to before. I just wasn’t that interested. Though I should have been. Since their appointment is a lifetime commitment, I searched for other ways in which the decision could be reversed. I am not a lawyer, I would never claim to be one, but the thought of impeachment came to mind as i read:

High crimes and misdemeanors is a phrase from Section 4 of Article Two of the United States Constitution: “The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

“High” in the legal parlance of the 18th century means “against the State”. A high crime is one which seeks the overthrow of the country, which gives aid or comfort to its enemies, or which injures the country to the profit of an individual or group. In democracies and similar societies it also includes crimes which attempt to alter the outcome of elections.

This is an excerpt from Wikipedia. This makes sense to me.

While it’s true that corporations are made up of people, people should come first. “All men are created equal” does not refer to groups of people. It applies to them as individuals. Reading the case of Citizens United became so confusing and convoluted to my head, that I couldn’t possibly read any further. I will leave laws up to the lawyers as far as that goes. The portion of the excerpt that really hit it home for me was “A high crime is one which seeks the overthrow of the country, which gives aid or comfort to its enemies, or which injures the country to the profit of an individual or group.”

An individual or group. Does this sound any other alarms for anyone else?
