The Fight For Internet Privacy

Posted on Tuesday, 21st May 2013 @ 09:11 AM by Text Size A | A | A

With a variety of new technological inventions coming out on a monthly basis, there is no doubt that people of all ages want to buy some of the these newest developing items to stay up to date with the technological world. However, surfing the internet, writing an email, watching a video on Youtube, etc.- all of these activities can be monitored by companies who want information on an individual’s personal life. While using the internet has always been known to not be as private as it should be, now is the time to really focus on this issue while laws are in place to demolish the right of companies to snoop around in the personal files of individuals through their internet activity.

The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) is a bill that would grant corporations the right to view an individual’s social media account(s), emails, browsing sessions, etc. and this bill is exactly what needs to be prevented in order to protect the right for internet privacy for everyone. Although CISPA was recently denied by the U.S. Senate, the effort to prevent corporations in viewing our personal information is still necessary in order to succeed.

While social media sites like Facebook and Twitter may seem like harmless ways to socialize with friends and family, without preventative government companies will have the power to view your accounts and browse through seemingly private conversation between you and others that are not-so-private when it comes to corporations wanting to know more about you. This is why internet privacy is such a big issue, because it is so easy for corporations to just browse through anyone’s personal information without them knowing. While Michigan and California have passed laws regarding social media privacy, the internet is vast and it appears that there is no way of completely securing the privacy of anyone as long as corporations are still looking.
