Discrimination In Schools

Posted on Saturday, 1st June 2013 @ 09:13 AM by Text Size A | A | A

Despite the fact that many schools claim not to be discriminatory towards students, the truth of the matter is that this behavior is still present whether others know about it or not. This issue isn’t something new; however, it still is an issue that needs to be discussed because apparently it just doesn’t get through to the people that feel it’s alright to discriminate against innocent students who should instead be learning about how not to treat others differently based on race, gender, sexuality, etc.

Throughout history, the majority of the blame was always put on white people for dishing out racism towards people of differing races; however, the truth is that racism can happen to anyone, including white people. The situations may differ, but the racism, whether towards an Anglo, African American, or even Hispanic person, is still the same. While an African American may be a victim of discrimination in a school consisting of mainly white students, in turn a white student may be the victim in a school consisting of primarily black students. Essentially, there is no reason to judge a person based on race and instead everyone should have the opportunity for a fair and equal education.

On another note, gender and sexuality can invoke discrimination, as well. While gender roles may affect how a student is seen in their school, sexuality is also a big issue when it comes to discrimination. Whether you’re gay, straight, bisexual, etc., there is no reason to be discriminated against for something that is not even a choice to begin with. The fact that you can’t choose your sexuality is something that bullies everywhere don’t seem to comprehend and it’s extremely unfair for people who are not straight to be the victims of bullying and harassment simply because their preference in gender strays from the norm of society. It’s as simple as this: a person’s sexuality is of no one’s concern to begin with, therefore don’t concern yourself with it and instead allow others to have the same opportunity for an education in a non-threatening environment.
