We all know that it’s against school policy to wear inappropriate clothing, but does a shirt expressing the right to bear arms really count as something inappropriate? Apparently it’s deemed as a violation of school policy in West Virginia when a middle school student was charged for wearing a t-shirt with an NRA (National Rifle Association) logo on it. The shirt sported the slogan “Protect your right” and caused controversy when school officials asked him to remove the shirt and he refused, stating that he was simply exercising his First Amendment rights. According to Logan County PD, the student is now facing up to one year in jail and a $500 fine for this act.

The student was seen to have violated the dress code, which states that “If in the judgment of the administration, a student will be required to change clothes or cover up inappropriate clothing before returning to classes.” While the student may have been in violation of the dress code, it is not as if he arrived at school shirtless or with a shirt with an offensive or crude logo on it. The right to bear arms is part of the First Amendment and every person has the right to express their thoughts on the topic.

The school may have followed policy if the shirt had started a controversy or went against the views of faculty and students; nonetheless, up to a year of jail time and a $500 fine seems a bit extreme for a 14-year old, if you ask me.
