Evangelical Christianity: The New Hate

Parts of the South and Midwest have been hit by the worst spring storms in over 50 years. Huge tornadoes, massive flooding, hundreds of people dead, more missing. Billions of dollars in damage. I saw a news clip of a woman, standing outside what used to be her home, wondering aloud where her neighbors were. They had chosen to stay rather than evacuate, and now they were missing. Tears rolled down her face as she looked around at the devastation, but her only thoughts were for her friends. To me, that’s a Christian.

Janet Porter is the leader of a group called Faith2Action. It is an evangelical Christian organization, that, among many things, is trying to get something called “The Heartbeat Bill” passed into law in numerous states. This bill has been approved by the House Panel in Ohio. It states that an abortion is illegal at the first detection of a fetal heartbeat. It does not make allowances for women who have been raped or are the victims of incest. Fetal heartbeats can be present as early as two weeks after conception. Janet Porter calls this legislation “an arrow through the heart of Roe V Wade.” The executive director of NARAL Pro Choice in Ohio, Kellie Copeland, thinks The Heartbeat Bill is a “stunt that trivializes women’s health”. Janet Porter believes that America’s pro choice laws, along with our acceptance of homosexuals and the government’s “lack of support” for Israel have caused the protective hand of God to wane, and the results were those tornadoes. I’m serious. Below is a transcript from a one minute commentary she made on her radio program:

[Is God trying to get our attention?

The worst tornado outbreak in American history has left hundreds dead. Mississippi flooding had not been this bad in 80 years. Wildfires have swept through millions of acres in Texas and Oklahoma.

There are a number of things that could give God reason to at least partially lift His protective hand from America, including the millions of abortions done here each year, the flaunting of sexual sin, and our recent treatment of Israel.

Any support that the U.S. provides for dividing the Holy Land risks God’s wrath against us. Rabbi Aryeh Spero says that a division could displace 400,000 Jews from their homes and more Christian holy sites would fall under Muslim control.

Pray that this will not happen and that many Americans will give their undivided attention to God.]

Do you know why Christians love Israel? Because according to the Book of Revelations, if Israel is not a state at the time of the Rapture, Christians will not ascend into Heaven. That’s it. And, because you have to accept Christ as the Messiah, or you don’t get to into Heaven, all those Jews that Christians fawn over will burn and writhe in agony as all the “faithful” ride their pretty little clouds up to the pearly gates.

Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church have signs that read “God Hates America”. Do you know why a group categorized as a hate group by the SPLC carries signs that say that? Because Fred Phelps believes EXACTLY what Janet Porter believes. He believes that God has turned His back on America because of abortion and homosexuality. Michael Savage, conservative radio host and darling of the right, said this about Phelps in 2009:

“Fred Phelps is a patriotic American, and we need more people like him to survive as a nation.”

Mike Hucakbee has joked that he answers to “two Janets”. One is his wife, the other is Janet Porter. Ms. Porter, along with blaming abortions, homosexuality and her strange vision of the Rapture for the recent tornadoes and wildfires, believes that Democrats want to throw all Christians in jail for practicing their faith. We don’t actually, we just wish you would stop practicing and actually start ACTING like Christians. Ms. Porter also believes that President Obama is a communist spy, trained by the Russians to infiltrate our government. She bases this on an email she received from someone no one has ever been able to prove exists.

I like Jesus, I really do. He was the original pacifist, the original peacenik, the original nice guy. He wanted us to love one another, turn the other cheek, forgive each other over and over again. He tossed money lenders out of the temple, told a rich guy he’d have less of a chance getting into Heaven than shoving a camel through the eye of a needle. He loved kids, and the downtrodden, even saying the meek shall inherit the Earth. Does any of the vitriol being spewed by the current crop of evangelical Christians even remotely resemble Jesus’s teachings and tenets? Nope. There is no such things as Republican Jesus, or Supply Side Jesus (a tip of the hat to Al Franken for that one), and there is no such thing as the Jesus people like Mike Huckabee, and Janet Porter and Fred Phelps claim to follow. No where in the New Testament does it talk about hate, except to say it’s a bad thing. You know what I think? I think people like Mike Huckabee, Pat Robertson, Janet Porter, Fred Phelps, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Rush Limabaugh are the Pharisees in the New Testament. I think, if Jesus came back today (or next Saturday, as the rumors scream), all those self righteous hate mongers would nail Him back up on that tree faster than you can say “Jesus was WHITE!”. He wasn’t by the way.
